Meet Ipe — pronounced ee-pay. An exotic tropical hardwood from the rainforests of Central and South America that has earned a legendary reputation as Ironwood.

This batch is like nothing we have ever seen. You get the full spectrum of light to dark colors, every shade the wood has to offer. No two sticks are identical. Every pair carries the natural character of the forest it came from.

The name Ironwood is not marketing. It is earned.

Ipe scores 3,680 lbf on the Janka Hardness Scale — the gold standard test for wood durability, measuring the force required to drive a steel ball halfway into a wood sample. That number puts Ipe:

  • 3x harder than Red Oak
  • 8x harder than California Redwood
  • Nearly twice as hard as domestic Hickory

Ipe is so dense that it sinks in water. The U.S. Forest Products Laboratory classifies it at the highest possible durability rating — Very Durable, 25+ years — with zero chemical preservatives required.

When people call it Ironwood, they mean it.

 

Why Ipe Makes the Ultimate Stick

We tested these sticks the way all Budo Brothers gear gets tested — hard, and honestly.

Every wood stick has the same vulnerability: contact with hard materials leaves marks. Strike steel, carbon fiber, or dense synthetics — like our own Phenolic and Carbon Fiber Kali sticks — and most wood sticks start showing the damage fast. Pickling marks. Surface compression. The grain beginning to bruise and deteriorate with repeated contact.

Not with Ipe.

Where other wood sticks get chewed up, the Ipe Kali sticks hold. The extreme density of the wood resists the kind of surface damage that marks up every other hardwood we've tested.

Kali Length — 28" The classic full-length Kali/Escrima stick. The standard for Arnis, Eskrima, and most FMA systems worldwide. Built for long-range striking, flow drills, and full-power training.

Serrada Length — 21" The Serrada Eskrima standard. Shorter, faster, and designed for the tight, rapid-fire striking patterns and close-quarters work that define the Serrada system.

Stubbie — 18" Compact and explosive. Built for close-range drills, tight training environments, and practitioners who want a shorter stick for speed work and fast-twitch development.
